Develop your listening skills for playing music in this string band music course in Seattle! This course is taught in the old-time tradition of learning by ear, and each week you will learn one new tune that you will focus on to perfect your technique.
Going beyond the typical “jam session, ” this course was developed to elevate players’ ear training and harmonizing to help grow musician communication styles for future old-time circles.
Each day, a Cornish College accompanist will join the group to ensure a solid rhythm section is always available. This music course is a fantastic way to develop your skills and connect with a community of local musicians in Seattle!
Learning Outcomes:
  • Learning by ear: developing listening skills
  • Repertoire of old-time tunes and songs, including common melodies and lyrics
  • Playing in different keys and tunings
  • Exploring traditional rhythmic patterns (e.g., drones, syncopation)
  • Harmonizing and arranging tunes for string band instrumentation
  • Understanding the role of each instrument in a string band
  • Techniques for improvisation and variation within traditional tunes


Knowledge required
This course is open to all levels of players who are comfortable playing basic song structures (1-4-5, G-C-D, etc…) on stringed instruments.

This class series runs over 8 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 12 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.
