Day of the Dead Ceramics Workshop

Learn how to sculpt sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos in this Vallejo workshop!

2 hours Class size 6 to 10 guests     $75

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a creative activity in this Vallejo ceramics class! In this beginner hand building class, you will learn how to make Calaveras to honor your loved ones.
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is the day for remembering and celebrating our departed loved ones. This holiday is notable for its use of the Calavera (skull) as a way of representing death and reminding the living to enjoy life! You'll join your instructor, Maritza Dominguez, in the pottery studio for a joyful evening of creating and decorating your own clay skulls.
You will start with a hollow ball of clay that you will then shape into a skull. Don't worry if you're a beginner, Maritza will be on hand to help guide you through the process.
You are also encouraged to personalize your skull in a way that is meaningful to you. Use clay cutters to make flowers, butterflies, leaves, and even mustaches, or use colorful underglazes, soft clay, or beads to add some flair to your creation. After class, your skulls will be fired and ready for pickup before the Day of the Dead is observed!
If you're looking for ways to celebrate this special holiday, creating personalized and handcrafted items is a beautiful and rewarding way to honor your departed loved ones. This will be a fun night celebrating life with a great playlist, marigold flowers, and a colorful Mexican folk banner to set the mood in the studio.

Vallejo Clay Workshop is located in the pottery studio of Whitney Smith in beautiful downtown Vallejo. Whitney has been a full-time potter for over 20 years, and started her studio in Oakland, California before moving to Vallejo with her husband and cat in 2018. She opened her new studio on Marin street in March of that year.
Starting a workshop to teach students was not part of the original plan when Whitney moved to Vallejo. But so many locals asked for an opportunity to get their hands in clay that Vallejo Clay Workshop insisted in being born.
The studio is an inspirational space where groups of students can gather and create work. The studio is currently equipped with work tables, a slab roller, kilns, and all the tools needed to make functional or sculptural work.
Because space is limited, classes and workshops are small and individual attention to students is key. We will continue to add new classes, be sure to sign up for our email list so you can be the first to know!
