What you'll do
Take your drawing skills to the next level with this figure drawing workshop in NYC. This beginner-friendly class will focus on gestures and mark making. After this class, you will have a better understanding of how lines create visual language and how lines express images. You will also better understand narrative lines so when you are looking at drawings, you can understand why an artist chooses to use one line over another to depict the objective of the drawing.This class includes a mix of 30-second gestural drawings, 1-minute, 5-minute, and 10-minute poses followed by a final 20-minute pose. Each class will include one model who will be nude during each pose. All phones will be collected at the start of the class and available during breaks.Instruction topics:
- A quick overview of the history of mark making and the history of line as an element of visual language.
- Visual materials include cave drawings from Blombos, Lascaux, and Altamira followed by a demo of drawing different kinds of lines, shapes, marks, etc., and having an interactive discussion about how the differences in line can be interpreted and perceived, demonstrating how gestural line drawing is a visual starting point for drawing the figure as a whole.

The Brooklyn Loft is an art and workshop studio located in Bushwick, dedicated to creating meaningful, one-of-a-kind experiences centered around community for LGBTQ+ and a/Artist individuals. In April 2023, it began hosting figure drawing sessions with a weekly event called Queer Figure Drawing. Since then, The Brooklyn Loft has expanded its offerings to 5-6 sessions a week, pushing the boundaries of traditional figure drawing with themes such as Britney Spears, Barbie, Beyoncé, and burlesque. Additionally, the studio has diversified its workshops to include collage, poetry, and other hobbies beyond figure drawing.
