In this virtual South Asian natural dye class, you will learn the art of 'Bandhani' (South Asian tie-dye) creating vibrant and intricate textile art. Throughout the workshop, you will discover the basics of natural dye, how to extract dyes from natural sources commonly found in South Asian culture.
If you're new to the world of natural dyeing, fear not! The craft kit will have everything you need to get started. Our virtual kits come with a pre-treated tote bag that is already scoured and mordanted. This ensures your naturally dyed tote will retain its color and last a lifetime.
Our experienced instructor will guide you through each step with clear instructions and helpful tips. You'll be amazed at how easy and rewarding it can be to create your own beautiful, eco-friendly fabrics.
Your kits will also contain a natural dye color of your choice: Marigold (yellow), madder (pink), or blue pea flower (blue). We will use lentils to create resist ties throughout the fabric (a special South Asian technique). This will allow you to personalize your project with your favorite color and design!
If you're looking for fun things to do at home, this DIY dye kit and virtual class will treat you to a day of relaxation and creative exploration! By the end of the workshop, you'll have a newfound appreciation for the art of natural dyeing and a collection of unique, handmade textiles to cherish.

Growing up as a queer first-gen South Asian American in the Chicagoland area, art was how I expressed myself and how I connected to my culture. During the pandemic, I started to investigate what was most important to me and really started to explore South Asian craft and all of its influences in the Western art/fashion world. This eventually led to me quitting my tech job, and from there I traveled to India and partnered with craft organizations to learn more about ancestral art forms. During this trip, I gained a true appreciation for the skill and labor required for traditional crafts. This trip inspired me to dive into the world of natural dye, and share my knowledge of South Asian craft and history.
Whether you're attending my in person workshops, buying one of my craft kits, or leading your own craft party... my guided experiences will leave you learning about another culture, exploring your personal connection to craft, and uncovering how interconnected the craft world really is.
