Unlock the magic of making naturally leavened bread in our engaging virtual workshop! Join us online as we demonstrate how to create a delicious long-fermented sourdough bread loaf. What typically takes three days of fermentation will be expedited so you can see each step in the fermentation process from the comfort of your own kitchen.
The best part? If you opt for our optional kit, you’ll have everything you need delivered right to your door, including a dehydrated sourdough starter culture. You’ll also take home the skills to nurture and reuse it, transforming your kitchen into a haven of homemade bread that keeps on giving!
No worries if you’re new to bread-making—our expert instructor will guide you through essential techniques. You’ll learn how to prepare your sourdough starter for optimal leavening, mix your dough, and master the unique kneading technique of “stretching and folding.” Plus, you’ll discover how to shape, proof, and bake your loaf to perfection, along with the essential tools and ingredients for success!
After class, you’ll need to tend to your dough for about three hours before baking your loaf the next day, approximately 12-16 hours later. A full timeline will be available after purchase to help you stay on track. This baking workshop is perfect for aspiring bakers, culinary enthusiasts, or anyone looking to impress friends and family with fresh, homemade bread!
Advanced Prep
If you choose the kit option, be sure to activate your dehydrated starter culture at least 1-2 weeks before the class. If you want to bake along during the video class, review the advanced prep and timeline provided upon purchase to ensure you’re ready. If you prefer just the virtual class, a supplies list will be provided so you can gather your own ingredients.

Located in Oakland, California, Preserved is a culinary shop by day, and a workshop space by night. For nearly a decade, we've been teaching classes and selling ingredients, tools and supplies relating to preserving and fermenting. We offer in-depth, hands-on workshops on making pickles, kombucha, cheese, jams, sourdough & much more.
I opened Preserved in 2015, after working for 10 years in the restaurant industry with a focus on local, sustainable and handmade food. Partway through my food career, I began to desire a more intimate connection with the food and beverages I loved, so I embarked on a journey to learn how they were made. I started (literally) from the ground up, learning sustainable farming practices through the work-travel organization, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Preserving the harvest from my urban garden was a natural next step. Inspired by Sandor Katz’s book, Wild Fermentation, I was soon experimenting with the alchemy of fermentation.
Through a combination of formal training, insatiable curiosity and extensive home experimentation, I continued to explore the flavors and health benefits of traditionally-preserved foods, beverages and herbal medicines. I studied Holistic Nutrition at Bauman College in Berkeley, California, and apprenticed with a natural wine maker in Oregon, a cheesemaker in Watsonville, CA and an herbalist in Oakland, CA.
I continue to be driven by the desire to learn, create and share the joys and health benefits of traditional culinary techniques at Preserved. Opening Preserved has allowed me to continue exploring preservation techniques and to share these ancient practices with my community. Not only are we preserving food, but together we are preserving tradition!
