Wheel Throwing
If you're curious about learning how to make colorful pottery, give this NYC ceramics course a go! This class is the chance for complete beginners to go from knowing nothing to being able to make work they love. This is a colored clay class, sometimes referred to as Japanese neriage - a gorgeous technique resulting in swirled, different-colored clay.
In this pottery course, you will meet once a week for eight consecutive weeks. All materials, tools, and even firing fees are included!
Week One
Students will be given stains and clay to mix together to produce various colors. Percentages and dilutions, as well as making secondary and custom colors and tints, will be discussed. No actual making time is included in week one.
Week Two
Wheel throwing 101 with colored clay will include stacking to make marbled works.
Week Three
Wheel throwing continued, this time with specialized tools and the addition of nerikomi laminates to your wheel designs.
Week Four
Trimming, smoothing, sanding, and finishing works to be fired. Many new patterns can be revealed during this process.
Week Five
Fire works and consider new project ideas and custom colors, continue to attempt the wheel and hone your skills.
Week Six
Glazing using clear, colors, and even no glaze at all. This is the last week to work wet so make lots of pieces.
Week Seven
Luster week and finishing up works.
Week Eight
Critique and wrap up of the course.
Typically, students can expect to make between 1 and 4 pieces and pick up their finished glazed works one week after the final class.
