Learn the process of creating colorful Nerikomi pottery from start to finish in this New York ceramics course. This class is an introduction to Nerikomi ceramics over eight consecutive sessions.
This pottery class is welcome to all levels, from experienced potters to beginners ready to jump into a new hobby.
Week One:
You will be given stains and clay to mix together to produce various colors. Percentages and dilutions, as well as making secondary and custom colors and tints, will be discussed. All of class one is dedicated to mixing clays, no work is produced.
Week Two:
Geometric shapes. Stripe and checker pattern: We will make slabs with patterns that can be formed into various objects like cups and bowls.
Week Three:
Organic shapes: How to design and execute anything organic by breaking down its shapes and putting them together and then cutting. A butterfly or flower with outlines will be shown.
Week Four:
Trimming, smoothing, sanding, and finishing works to be fired. Clarity of the pattern is achievable at this stage.
Week Five:
You will work on projects and explore individual creative interests. Deadline to bisque any works you want lustered.
Week Six:
Deadline for glazing any works that you want to luster.
Glazing works, clear, Nerikomi “stain, ” naked, as well as colorful but translucent glazes will be discussed.
Pseudo Kintsugi - patch up any cracks and prepare to use gold next week.
Week 7
Lusters such as silver, gold and the popular mother of pearl will be applied and any kintsugi repairs will be gilded.
Week 8
Works will emerge out of the kiln ready to take home. Lusters such as silver, gold and the popular mother of pearl will be applied and any kintsugi repairs will be gilded.
Typically, you can expect to make between 1-4 pieces and pick up your finished glazed works one week after class. Open studio is available at an additional cost.

Knowledge required
Perfect for beginners but can be more challenging than other pottery classes due to subject matter.
