Hello! My name is Samhita, and I am a visual artist based in Brooklyn with roots in Portland, Oregon, and Bangalore, India. My multidisciplinary practice spans illustration, ceramics, natural dyeing, design, and workshops. I hold a BFA in Studio Art from New York University.
I grew up in South India surrounded by flowers. My deep love for flowers stems from my parents, who are passionate about nature, gardening, and sustainability. During the pandemic, I began foraging fallen blooms and leaves in my neighborhood and gathering leftover kitchen ingredients. Through a lot of experimentation, I discovered the potential and magic of natural dyes and began dyeing fabric with these materials. I enjoy the unpredictable nature of this practice as it allows me to honor my ground and trust the process!
As an extension of my practice, I teach and produce natural dye workshops, focusing on the bundle dye technique. This approach uses local and seasonal flowers, dye extracts, herbs, and spices to create unique and experimental textile pieces by steaming the fabric in bundles. Since 2023, I have collaborated with brands, story-forward home goods shops, and peer-led community spaces across New York, Upstate New York, and Bangalore, including The North Face, Index Space, Hike Clerb, Flower Shop Collective, and Common Things.
