Reimagine those forgotten pieces in your closet in our Upcyle UrThreads Screen Priting class! In this class, sustainability and eco-friendly practices are the name of the game where we teach you how to print on apparel that could use a little pick-me-up. Don't discount those luxury textiles such as silk and cashmere, they can be printed on using our 100% biodegradable dye-based ink too
The star of this printing workshop is the dye-based ink that we make together from scratch. The ink is produced using sodium alginate, a renewable resource made from brown algae and dye pigments. Unlike plastisol, an oil based ink, the ink waste we create during this class can be washed away without having an impact on the environment.
Prepare for this class by sending in a single color graphic to print with and spend an afternoon going through your closet or thrifting a few garments to print onto during class. Bring in any natural fiber thrifted garments such as silk slips or shirts, wool/cashmere sweaters, cotton shirts or anything that can be spruced up with your unique print! As long as the color is white or light, dye ink will be perfect for it. Check out the notes below to guide your search!
When printing with Acid Dyes (on silk & wool), garments will be ready for pick up 1 week after class.
Things To Keep In Mind When Thrifting Your Apparel:
  • The dye ink works best on white/light colored garments, the dye will not show up on anything dark gray, navy, brown, black, etc.
  • Please check clothing labels to be sure your materials are natural fiber, no synthetic material, polyester satin, acrylic wool, or rayon.
  • We can’t screen print over buttons and zippers, so if your garment has these fasteners, the artwork must be printed on the back!
  • Blank apparel is best, the dye will not adhere to graphics that came printed onto the apparel.
  • You can print up to three pieces. They all need to be tops, no bottoms as they require a specific set up.

Carousel's is a Screen Printing Production Studio based in Brooklyn New York, founded by India Armstrong in 2021. Carousel’s is a proud female owned independent business with a boutique team that keeps the studio up and running. The bread and butter of our business relies on three key factors; during the day time we produce “contract printing” on a variety of products, during the evening we teach an array of workshops for screen printers and lastly we have open studio access for members to print there heart out.
