Paint wooden avatars inspired by you or a loved one at this hands-on NY workshop

1.5 hours Class size 1 to 10     label $85
We all long to be seen and recognized, and we should always acknowledge the people (and pets) that make life special. In this rewarding New York workshop, you'll paint wooden avatars to celebrate individuality and its importance!
During this unique, beginner-friendly class, we’ll create a lil’ piece of art that represents you or someone you love. Explore how you can capture a person’s essence—just with a hairline and well-plotted eyes.
We’ll ask what beauty you see in this person that you want to bring forth. And then you'll sketch, paint, and podge a personalized wooden figure. After all, who wood-n’t want a selfie?
At the end of the class, take home a personalized wooden avatar to admire, a constant reminder that what makes us different is also what makes us special!

Esther Mun

Esther Mun’s love of typography led her to the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She first practiced design at Pentagram before becoming an integral member of the Duffy + Partners design team. In 2006, she co-founded an independent design studio, Little Fury Design studio, with an initial product line of linkable notebooks and a specialization in branding and packaging. When she’s off of her laptop, she’s painting LilCakeToppers for special occasions. Her true joy is connecting with friends over cold brews. She’s energized by never-ending curiosity in others, a sense of humor, and bringing people together to spark new unique gems.

Call to Gather
Call to Gather

The inspiration for Gather was sparked by a dream in 2019:
I heard a voice say, “I gave you raw materials. Go. Make. Play.”
I responded, “Like what?”
The voice said, “Mud.”
I asked, “What does that even mean?”
Then I saw a vision of neatly organized writing products in bright yellow. I woke up in the middle of the night, wrote those exact words on my phone, and thought, “That’s another mysterious note from God.”
Around this time, I was hosting a monthly prayer gathering with artists and entrepreneurs at my design studio, Little Fury Design. I called it “Gather.”
This “Gather” became a sacred time of sharing, of praying, of encouraging, and of fueling each other’s spirits. It also prompted collaborations between the artists who came to pray.
After the pandemic hit, I felt a stronger urge to build what Gather could be, regardless of how we could meet. It became clear that this community and collaboration we were finding as artists is actually one that is accessible and powerful for all people, regardless of background or career. A few of the initial artists agreed to share their unique crafts—as our first Gather Artists. And Gather’s purpose solidified: we are a community through making.
